60-year-old Sarasota Inhabitant Fatally Struck by Car While Bicycling in Ellenton

Manatee County, Fl. – The incident happened approximately 22 hours ago, in Manatee County where a 60-year-old man from Sarasota was cycling. He was fatally hit by a car while enjoying his evening bicycle ride.
The car, a sedan, was being driven by a 32-year-old man from Ellenton, traveling west in the innermost lane of U.S. 301 (SR-43). He was nearing the driveway entrance of a shopping center located at 3410 U.S. 301 in Ellenton, as indicated by information from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Sarasota cyclist was heading south, crossing the westbound lanes of U.S. 301 at roughly 9:45 p.m. He crossed the path of the oncoming sedan, resulting in the car crashing into the bicycle, as per the accident report.
The bicycle rider was critically injured, promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later declared deceased. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and the identities of the cyclist and the sedan driver have yet to be disclosed.
The safety of bicyclists in Florida continues to be a significant concern. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has reported that this year alone, there have been 3,735 bicycle-related accidents and 96 fatalities so far.
