The end of 2024 is approaching, which means the most celebrated holiday across the world is coming up – New Year’s Eve. Right here in America, roughly one third of people nationwide will attend or host a party on Dec. 31. Sarasota and Manatee counties are no exception, with festivities, like the Pineapple Drop, also taking place in our crowded downtown areas.
It’s no secret that New Year’s Eve is a holiday associated with alcohol consumption. However, on average, more drinks are consumed on this day compared to any other, and binge drinking is extremely prevalent. That’s why if you’re planning to travel to an event – even a short distance – you need to take extra precautions to ensure you, your friends and loved ones arrive safely at your destination… and back home. Here’s what you should know about navigating New Year’s Eve responsibly.
Never Drink and Drive, Even a Short Distance
We can’t say this enough – there’s never a good reason to drink and drive. Roughly 37 people across the country die in these crashes every day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It’s not only a careless decision made by the driver, but truly life-altering for the loved ones of every accident victim who have to pick up the pieces. In fact, NHTSA data shows that last year alone 40% of overnight fatal accidents on New Year’s Eve involved alcohol.
Drinking? Have a Designated Driver
If you’re planning on consuming alcohol, whether it’s at a friend’s home or at a bar, always have a sober ride ready to take you home. As a group, decide ahead of time who will be your designated driver – or plan to call a rideshare, like Uber or Lyft, at the end of the night. On New Year’s Eve, you’ll likely encounter surge prices because of the high demand for these services. But keep in mind that no matter how expensive your Uber or Lyft may be, it’s the responsible, safe choice not only for you but for your friends, family and other motorists navigating our roads that night.
Are You the DD? Remember These Tips
Did you volunteer to be the sober driver this New Year’s Eve? Be cautious behind the wheel, as the early morning on this day is one of the deadliest times to be on the road:
- Drive Defensively: Be aware of your surroundings and ready to respond to other drivers’ actions. Never assume other drivers know your next move – drive the speed limit and signal when you’re changing lanes.
- Avoid Distractions: The notifications on your phone can wait. Put down any electronic devices, turn down the music in your car and concentrate on getting home safely.
- Keep Your Distance: Distance yourself from other cars that are maneuvering erratically. Not only does this increase your reaction time but also reduces the likelihood of a collision.
- Wear Your Seat Belt: This is a given – everyone in the vehicle, including you, should be wearing a seat belt. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that they reduce serious injuries and fatalities in auto accidents by roughly half.
